LIBERTARIAN ACCEPTS REPUBLICAN INVITATION TO DEBATES
July 12,2002

Ken Krawchuk, the Libertarian candidate for Governor, today accepted Mike Fisher's invitation to debate third party candidates in the upcoming race. The proposal includes seven debates in each of Pennsylvania's six media markets, in addition to a debate in the Lehigh Valley. Governor-hopeful Krawchuk was pleased to receive the news of his opponent's willingness to engage in a discussion of ideas and opinions for the future of Pennsylvania.

"I'd be honored to join Mr. Fisher in as many debates as possible." Krawchuk said. "The voters of Pennsylvania deserve to hear from all the candidates, not just candidates from the two old parties. Mr. Fisher should be commended for being willing to participate in discussing the important issues facing Pennsylvanians today."

The announcement to include the Libertarians in the debates came after uncertainty among Pennsylvania Libertarians as to whether the Republicans would in fact agree to the challenge. In the past, Republican candidates have dodged the notion of debating third parties. Republican Ex-Governor Ridge participated in two debates in '98, but avoided the remaining ones. Since then, Pennsylvania Libertarians have been eager for the Republicans to rejoin the public debate and re-establish the flow of free thoughts and ideas in state politics.

"I'm looking forward to being part of the true democratic process", Krawchuk said.

Founded in 1971, the Libertarian Party is the third largest political party in the state and the nation, with over 500 elected and appointed officials currently serving in office nationwide, and 71 in Pennsylvania, more than any other state except California. Like the Founding Fathers, Libertarians believe that you have a God-given, inalienable right to conduct your life as you see fit, without interference, so long as you respect the rights and property of others.
